Possible Early Köster Ancestors
The inforamtion presented here is from research done by Jürgen Hausfeld, from Münster, Germany, and Carol Saint-Clair, from Osnabrück, Germany. Both used the Kirchenbüch of St. Servatius Church in Berge.
“The Berge Kirchenbüch begins in 1690. Between 1732 and 1787 there are no trustworthy registers. In addition the church book entries are very incomplete. For example, there is a year where only one child is baptized, but 30 infants died at ages of less the six months. Often the data is also very economical. The entry might only say “getauft on 20 May, Eltern Köster.” Then it is difficult to find the correct family.” Jürgen Hausfeld
The early church record books of Berge appear to have been kept by priests who did not like doing this work. Many births and deaths were simply not recorded or only partial information was recorded. The marriage records are also missing from 1731-1787. This makes research very difficult and some gaps cannot be filled with facts. We can only make assumptions about the early generations and hope further records will be found in the future.
We currently assume the earliest Köster family members found in the records in Berge are our ancestors, but this remains a theory.
Earliest Köster Generation in Berge Area
Johannes Köster (circa 1650 - ?)
The earliest Köster found in records is Johannes Köster, likely born about 1650, who married Catharina Sieffers in about 1679. From this marriage there may have been nine or ten children. Johannes Köster and Catharina Sieffers are very likely the grandparents of our earliest proven ancestor, Johan Köster.
Our research shows the children of this marriage likely were:
. . . . 1. Rembert Köster, born about 1679
. . . . 2. Gerd Köster, born about 1683
. . . . 3. Henrich Köster, born about 1684
. . . . 4. Bernd Köster, born about 1686
. . . . 5. Infant Köster, baptized 25 November 1688 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover, and died, likely the same day
. . . . 6. Infant Köster, baptized 4 February1690 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover, and died, likely the same day
. . . . 7. Friedrich Köster, born about 1691
. . . . 8. Friedericus Köster, baptized 19 April 1693 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover, godparents were Friderich Ruhe and Anna Barbara Borgmans
. . . . 9. Anna Köster, baptized 1 August 1694 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover, godparents were Anna Stolde and Klaus Sivers
. . . .10. There is a possible 10th child listed in the records as “parvu” or tiny boy, baptized 28 February 1707 and died, likely the same day. Only the father, Jois or Johan Köster is listed in this record.
Rembert Köster (?-1704)
Rembert Köster, perhaps the brother of Johannes Köster, died on 4 November 1704, and he is listed as a Lutheran. No other records have been found for this person. He could be also be a cousin or even the son of Johannes. No age is listed in the record, so we cannot estimate a birth date.
Likely Generation Two in Berge Area
Rembert Köster (circa 1679-1728)
Rembert Köster, born about 1679, and perhaps the oldest child of Johannes Köster and Catharina Sieffers, married Catharina L. Uphauß 13 July 1700 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover. Witnesses to the marriage were Joes Schroder and Rembert Breckwedde. No children have been found from this marriage.
Rembert Köster next married Theodora Hammerfelt, on 10 August 1705 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover. Witnesses to this marriage were Joes Schroder and Joes Meyer.
Our research shows the children of this marriage, all baptized in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover, likely were:
. . . . 1. Infant Köster, baptized 11 September 1706 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover, and died, likely the same day. This child is listed as “parvula” or tiny girl
. . . . 2. Rembert Köster, baptized 7 January 1708 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover, and died, likely the same day. The record says “sepulti hizorum” which we have not been able to translate from Latin. It might mean that the child was slightly older than an infant when he died.
. . . . 3. Infant Köster, baptized 13 July 1712 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover, and died, likely the same day. The record lists the child as “parvu” or tiny boy.
Rembert Köster likely married a third time before 1714, to Elisabeth Maria Hulßkamp. Our research shows the children of this marriage, all baptized in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover, likely were:
. . . . 1. Rembert Köster, baptized 6 February 1719, godparents were Rembert Erhard and Adheid Fra????
. . . . 2. Gerd Niclas Köster, baptized 11 May 1721, godparents were Niclaus Scherhorn and Elisab. Brüning, who may have been the child's aunt, married to Bernd Köster
. . . . 3. Dierck Köster, baptized 22 June 1723, godparents were Dierck von Halen and Marg. Brüning Rembert Köster likely died 3 June 1728.
His death record lists him as a Lutheran, who died at 49 years old.
Gerd Köster (circa 1683 - ?)
Gerd Köster, born about 1683 and perhaps the second child of Johannes Köster and Catharina Sieffers, married Venne Voß before 1714. They had at least one child:

Johan Friedrich Köster, born about 1691 or 1693 and listed as Frerck in the record, likely the son of Johan Köster and Catharina Sieffers, married Anna Alheid Kenning before 1722. Johan Köster, born about 1691 or 1693, likely the son of Johan Köster and Catharina Sieffers, married Anna Catharina Brüning on 8 November 1723 in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover. This may be the same person as Johann Friederich Köster who married again the next year. We believe this is a different person than Johan Friedrich Köster who married Anna Adlheid Kenning. We have not found children from this marriage.
Johann Friederich Köster, born about 1693 or 1698, married Margaretha Elisabeth (Elsabein) Strübbe on 15 November 1724. This marriage was likely in the Lutheran rite. From this marriage there were at least three children, all baptized in Berge, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover:
